In last month’s edition of the MMM, we asked whether the trend of digitally overhauling commercial work trucks was a net positive. The lion’s share of your responses echoed a general theme: We’re dealing with some serious touchscreen fatigue.
While we love the connectivity, nobody wants to navigate fourteen sub-menus just to turn on the A/C with a pair of work gloves on.
Fortunately, as we navigate the back half of 2026, it seems the pendulum is finally settling. Automakers have heard the backlash, and we are now entering what I like to call the "Smart-Tactile" era. But as the dashboard strikes a compromise, a new challenge is emerging for commercial sales professionals: How do we sell the invisible tech that lives behind the dash?
Let’s look at the next phase of the commercial vehicle evolution and what it means for your bottom line.
The 2026 Euro NCAP ‘physical button mandates’ we discussed last month have already triggered a global course-correction. OEMs have begun addressing this mandate by integrating a hybrid cab design that assigns the right interface to the right task.
Here is what the new standard is starting to look like:
The Glass: High-resolution screens are being reserved strictly for heavy data (i.e. backup/360-camera feeds, dynamic routing and detailed telematics.)
The Old ‘Switcheroo’: Physical, glove-friendly toggles and heavy-duty dials have returned for immediate-need functions: Hazard lights, HVAC controls, volume knobs, and critical PTO/upfit engagements.
This is a huge win for commercial sales reps. You no longer have to apologize for a frustrating UI. Instead, you get to sell a cab that is intentionally engineered for job site practicality.
With the modern cab layout stabilizing, the true battleground has now shifted to telematics and data.
New commercial vehicles are essentially rolling data centers. Despite the many benefits of this uptick on in-demand vehicle information, many fleet managers are currently suffering from "alert fatigue." They don’t want a truck that sends them 40 push notifications a day about tire pressure fluctuations. They want a system that aggregates that data and simply tells them, “Truck 8 needs service by Tuesday, or you’ll lose a day of uptime.”
When you hand over the keys today, you’re no longer just selling GVWR, payload, upfit functionality and a well-appointed chassis—you’re now onboarding your commercial buyer into a software ecosystem.
To win in this contemporary market, your sales pitch needs to evolve alongside the truck. You’re now selling the "full system." Show your buyers how the vehicle's tech stack directly protects and supports their ROI by minimizing downtime and predicting maintenance before a catastrophic failure occurs at a job site. Plus, you get to promise them they’ll never have to swipe through three digital sub-menus on a giant ipad touchscreen just to get some fresh air in the cab.
As the industry continues to balance analog reliability with digital brilliance, our commitment to keeping your dealership ahead of the curve remains steadfast.
