The modern work truck is a marvel of technology, equipped with sprawling digital displays, AI-integration, and software-forward engineering. As a self-professed tech enthusiast and commercial vehicle pragmatist, I have to ask: Is this pendulous swing toward tech integration an undisputed win for our industry, or have we engineered ourselves into a digital corner?
Let's look at the facts and pose some objective realities about this new, tech-forward era.
For the last decade, the auto industry seemingly decided that if a surface didn't collect fingerprints and demand a swipe, it was obsolete. We traded our familiar knobs and switches for sleek, minimalist touchscreens. It looked fantastic in the showroom, but in the real world—especially on a jarring, bouncing job site—the practical application left quite a bit to be desired. Recent surveys actually show a substantial shift in driver sentiment as drivers are actively expressing frustration with distracting or difficult to manage screens.

Ultimately, we aren’t here to petition a return to hand-crank windows and Thomas Guides. Technological advancements in commercial vehicles offer certain indisputable benefits for efficiency, driver safety, and increased connectivity. But as we push further into 2026, it's worth asking if we are applying the right technology to the right functions.
Perhaps the sweet spot is a balanced approach, where software handles the heavy data lifting and physical buttons handle the critical, split-second human inputs. Seems that just might provide us with the best of both worlds.
